Geraldton is the key port and administration centre for the region and has a population of 40,000. The town is an important service centre and port for regional mining, crayfish/lobster fishing, wheat, sheep and tourism. Geraldton also has an exceptional monument to the 645 Australian soldiers lost in sinking of the HMAS Sydney II during WWII.
