Port Arthur Convict site

The Port Arthur penal station was established in 1830 as a timber-getting camp, using convict labour to produce sawn logs for government projects. From 1833 it was used as a punishment station for repeat offenders from all the Australian colonies. Port Arthur was remote, harsh, with no chance of escape, the perfect destination for hardened, repeat offenders. It is located on a peninsula, water all around with only one narrow landmass, Eaglehawk Neck, for escape on land and this neck was easily guarded. The only other escape was via the sea and some did try but not too many succeeded.
