New South Wales Diary

Novemberr 2013 - After our short visit to Melbourne, Victoria, we will now visit Lightning Ridge and then a few days later we'll be home (probably by Melbourne Cup Day)

28-10-2013 Monday
We drove 422 kms north-east, crossing the border into New South Wales, to the town of Narrandera (NSW) and the Narrandera Showgrounds for 1 night. Besides us there's only one other caravan here for the night - it's really nice and quiet. (There is a caravan park closeby and I was surprised that these showgrounds provide overnight stopping for campers. Found out there is conflict between the 2 establishments, especially as the price here is half that of the caravan park.) It's considerably hotter here than where we were in Melbourne the last couple days - won't need the heater on tonight.

Before leaving this morning we did some grocery shopping, fueled up and walked around the lovely town of Narrandera. Then we drove 392 kms north to the town of Dubbo (NSW) and the Dubbo Tourist Park for 1 night. We've been here before and done the sightseeing so this time it is just a stopover.

30-10-2013 Wednesday
Drove 358 kms north to the town of Lightning Ridge (NSW) and the Opal Caravan Park for 3 nights. This park is about 2 kms out of the town, is only a few years old and, I want to move here! The new amenities are beautiful, lovely showers with screen doors (not curtains) in spacious rooms - the best we've had so far. On the way here we stopped for lunch at a rest area in the town of Walgett. While we were in this rest area we witnessed about 4 willy willies, mini dust twisters similar to tornados, with a life-force of their own, just moving quickly along the ground like they had legs! We haven't seen these much before in our travels. A couple with a mhome in the rest area, were sitting in the nearby open shelter shed and we watched as one of these willy willies moved quickly across the ground and right through where these 2 people were seated, showering them with dirt and rubbish. We couldn't believe it when not long later, another one did exactly the same thing, and they still sat there, being showered again!
