| Peurto Chacabuco (Chile). There isn't anything much here at Chacabuco. After everyone arrived ashore off the tenders and at the bus, we drove for a little while and then made a bathroom stop in nearby Puerto Aysen, as there wouldn't be another opportunity before we got to our lunch destination. Our guide had to get the lady to unlock the bathroom (banos) as people here don't often start their day until after 10am (sounds like my kind of place). Here we saw the longest suspension bridge in Chile, painted orange and similar looking to, but a smaller version of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco USA. The Strait of Magellan, also called the Straits of Magellan, is a navigable sea route separating mainland South America to the north and Tierra del Fuego to the south. Positioned along the southern edges of the South American continent, this once-vital passageway is named for the Portuguese adventurer, Ferdinand Magellan, the first explorer to circumnavigate the globe. Located on the Strait of Magellan, Chile's Punta Arenas was once one of the most important supply stops for mariners of the day, until the Panama Canal opened in 1914. It is a city near the tip of Chile's southernmost Patagonia region. |
